"Oh what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to device." This commonly quoted line from Walter Scott was published in 1808 in the poem Marmion. Walter Scott is known for his writings of both poems and novels, including Rob Roy and Lady of the Lake. Marmion was written to help memorialize the battle of Flodden Field. It was purchased by the publisher sight unseen.Marmion is written about the Lord Marmion who was seeking the affections of a lady. This woman had already been spoken for, but the Lord used his powers to help himself out. He alledged that Sir Wilton, his love's bequeathed, committed treason against the country. Wilton is forced to flee the country after fighting for his honor. He eventually is able to return when Marmion is killed in battle. He regains his honor and is able to marry his love. The quote, "What a tangled web we weave when first we practice to device," refers to the love triangle occurring between the three main characters of the poem. Lord Marmion loves Clara de Clare, but she already loves Sir Wilton. Wilton is then targeted by Marmion because of this love as a way to win Clara's affections for himself. Marmion received lots of attention from the public as soon as it was released. It was in its third printing in only a short time. Critics were not quite as quick to appreciate the poem for how the public saw it. This made no difference to the warm feelings the public felt about his writings, and they continued to sell well for years to come.Marmion is a poem that still resonates with readers today. The webs in the modern world have become even more tangled as society has modernized. The same sort of love triangles happen in today's world. Readers can read and make this connection with someone who wrote it centuries in advance.
